Being of a perverse nature and having a tendency to question things, I decided to do some research on the derogatory term 'luddite'  (as in " what do you mean you're not going to upgrade to XP, you luddite!").  A luddite in conventional language these days is someone who is opposed to new technology. Using this definition, a dedicated luddite would presumably do mathematical calculations using a stick and wet sand on the beach. Provided the stick wasn't manufactured, of course! Seems far fetched, doesn't it?

As it turns out my natural instinct for smelling injustice was accurate. The Luddites were a group of English cottage industry craftsmen of the early 1800's who were fighting to retain their way of life.  As we know, history is written by the victors, which in this case was not the Luddites. As a result the smear campaign of the time, promoted by the government and factory owners, stuck and they were painted as idiots afraid of change. It is this dis-information that gave rise to the modern definition of a luddite as a technophobe. What they were actually protesting was the destruction of their way of life by the introduction of large-scale textile factories.

And what an enviable way of life it was. Picture this, (please go to iTunes download and play 'Morning' from the Peer Gynt Suite), a small cottage in the bucolic English countryside. Butterflies flit from colourful flower to colourful flower whilst the birds sing sweetly in the lush green trees by the babbling brook. Inside the cottage the weaver is contently finishing his latest creation destined for the markets of Europe and because the price of his goods never changes, he knows how much he will be paid. His wife and children are happily helping him in his tasks. Pausing to refresh himself from his labours, he wanders out into the garden to check on the progress of the spinach, pull a few weeds out of the potato patch and throws the chickens some food left over from the family lunch..... I think I could cope with that!

So these craftsmen, faced with the life that they had built for themselves being destroyed by machine technology, petitioned parliament, but to no avail. Eventually they took more drastic measures and began to destroy the machines that were the source of their problems. They were not technophobes, they were people reacting to a very real threat to their idyllic cottage industry way of life. They did not target all technology, but rather those technologies that would have a negative effect on their lives and this is the point.

A quick look at the real history of the Luddite movement reveals that it was well thought out and that it was not change itself that the Luddites were afraid of, but rather the negative effects that the change would bring about. The Luddites predicted quite accurately that the factories would destroy their largely independent and self-sufficient lifestyles. Their movement was well organised and lasted for more than a year before the British army violently quashed it.

So a more correct definition of a Luddite would be some one who is against technology that does not enhance what it is to be human and someone who believes that not all technology is good technology - take the pogo stick for example!! Luddites were not fighting against technology but the effects of technology on the quality of life. Do you remember what computers were going to do for the quality of life? The paperless office, all menial and tedious tasks were going to automated and computerised and the average person would only to work two days a week! Yeah! Right!

In essence most people are not much better off today than the textile mill workers of the 19th century who were locked in a factory away from their homes and families, with no quality of enterprise. It's just that today the 'dilbert' cubical is air conditioned!

The problems that the Luddites faced are still with us; the difference for us is that we were born in to them so we think it is normal.

But good news. Thanks to computer and satellite technology a new generation of pre-Luddite entrepreneurs is emerging. In our droves we are reversing the movement, leaving the factories and starting home based businesses just like the weavers of old.

Thanks to appropriate technology, we have the opportunity to conduct business whilst packing the kids off to school, planting the spinach, feeding the chickens and maybe an afternoon delight between google-ads.
The computer has replaced the weaver's loom, the internet has replaced the traveling merchants, software has replaced the yarn, but I bet you we have the same aspirations for peace, joy and happiness as our ancestors.

So now is a good time to plan your escape from the open plan office and work station that enslaves you 8+ hours per day, that you spend 1+ hours getting to and 1+ hours getting home from.

The bottom line is that each forum is different and if you are to be an outstanding member, you have to play by the rules. If you don't, you might get slapped and even publicly humiliated. That doesn't amount to good marketing.

In conclusion, the best way to market yourself in a forum is to not really market yourself at all but rather to be a consistent member that contributes quality and substance to the community. When your motive is to help others, contribute good content and become an integral part of a community, you end up marketing yourself without even trying.

When you start participating in various forums, you'll notice the various Signature Boxes on the bottom of the majority of the comments posted by forum members. A similar kind of advertisement is Pay Per Impression (PPI).  Although they are virtually undistinguishable for the audience they target, PPI are different for the advertisers.  With PPI advertisers pay for every time their ads are shown, and not only for the times the ads are clicked on.  In order for this type of advertising to be effective, the website where the ads are displayed must offer products that are complementary to those you offer, or vise versa.

As you can see, the driving factor of advertising is your budget.  If you can afford to pay for your traffic then you can run an ad campaign, but if you are on a tight budget then you have to create other traffic generating resources.

So what is this magnificent free laser-targeted traffic generating tool I mentioned early on?  Well… you are reading it.  One of the ways I use to drive the most traffic to my website is to write articles.  You don't have to be a certified writer or a literature Nobel Prize winner to write articles, just make sure you know what you are talking about and show your passion for it through your writing.

In order to get your articles to drive traffic to your website you must make sure that they get published all over the internet and that there is a link to your website at the end of each article you write.  Article submission websites and article directories are great tools to get your articles published.  Most website owners strive to keep their content fresh and interesting to their visitors, but because of time limitations it is often very difficult to come up with original content.  This is where your articles come in!  These webmasters take advantage of the free content you provide through your article, and they return the favor by displaying a live link to your website.  Before you know it you will have hundreds of pages displaying your articles followed by a link straight to your website.  The beauty about article writing is that the links you get from it are free and the traffic that you get from your links comes to you looking for "expert advice".  These links also help improve your page rank in search engines due to your increased link popularity.

Google AdSense is the most popular pay-per-click program currently online, they have offered pay per click, in one form or another, longer than any other search engine on the net.

They've put a great deal of research and development into their keyword matching to ensure it is a profitable program. Not only have they been around the longest, but they also boast the biggest number of advertisers as well.

Google requires website owners to conform to a number of rules, including:

All pages must have at least one link that leads to it, without concealing pages.

All links must be active and work.

There is a limit of 100 links per page. Creating a hierarchy should keep your navigation clean and well under the link limit.
Tags, especially the 'title' and 'alt' tags should be explanatory and distinct.

When designing your site, create one that is helpful to a user; don't design a page for search engines. Make sure you clearly define what your site is about.

Google forbids hidden text. Don't colorize the text as the same color as your background, or even size the text so small it can't be read. Google has been known to ban publishers who engage in these so called "black hat" techniques.

Google strongly recommends that you include a site map page.
They also strongly recommend you include a robots.txt file in your root directory. The robots.txt file tells website crawlers, like those that will match the ads with your website, which pages not to crawl. This is especially important if you want ads for some but not all of your content or if you have password protected pages.

Following the website design rules doesn't make you bullet-proof, though. Even if you follow all of them, you may still be at risk of losing your AdSense account permanently or even temporarily.

If you are indeed banned by Google to display AdSense advertisements on your page, you can file a re-inclusion request. Although not very successful many times, it still gives a publisher a chance to get back into the program.

Here's what you'll need to include in your re-inclusion request:

Your account name

Your contact information

A list of changes you've made to fix any violations

A guarantee it won't happen again

Reports and evidence of click bombing, if you have any (more on this below)

You should NOT include any threats to pull your business. Visit http://www.google.com/support/bin/request.py to contact customer support. Keep your email straightforward. The subject of your email should be "Re-inclusion Request" to make sure it gets to the right desk.

Click Bombing

Click bombing is when someone clicks on one or more of the ads that appear on your webpage repeatedly.

While this seems like a great way to increase your profits, it is against Google's policy and they are always searching for click bombers. While you can't prevent malicious click bomb attacks, you can take steps to defend yourself should you be accused of it.

Consider investing in a third party tracking software program that is approved by Google. Look for one that tracks IP addresses.

Run reports often, and keep them stored separately from your Google account. Should you be removed from the AdSense program, you won't necessarily have access to run reports.
If or when you are removed or fined by Google for AdSense abuse, make sure you send copies of your IP address reports along with your re-inclusion request.

As mentioned before, even if you follow all the rules of appeal and properly request a re-inclusion, you are not guaranteed a reversal. It seems most requests to be reinstated are not acted upon by Google.

Google's policy has been always one of "protecting the advertiser by any means necessary". Unfortunately, this may mean kicking a legitimate publisher out of the program needlessly if they've been targeted by a malicious person.

Earnings Calculations

So how much money can be made in the AdSense program? Publishers can earn A LOT. From 10 cents a day, to over one hundred thousand dollars a day. Of course this is all dependant on how much traffic your website gets as well as how well you integrate the advertisements. But how does Google calculate per click how much that you, the publisher, gets paid? This is the fuzziest of all gray areas in the AdSense program. Google admittedly doesn't disclose revenue share or whether the ads appearing on your site are cost-per-impression or cost-per-click. What they do tell you is how many page impressions (ads shown), number of clicks on the ads, page click through rate (CTR) and your earnings. Increase your impressions, number of clicks or CTR, and your earnings will follow.

Alternatives

If you've been removed from AdSense or are just looking for another option, there are a few to choose from:

Yahoo! Publisher Network is very similar to AdSense. Experienced webmasters who have used both Google and Yahoo! programs believe Yahoo! is second best, but still a very good, profitable program. As it becomes more popular, more advertisers will jump on board with Yahoo thus creating a PPC race with Google.

Chitika – A pay per click advertising stream. They don't have as many or such a variety as AdSense or Yahoo!, but are usually less expensive to advertise on.

AdBrite is very similar to Chitika, though slightly smaller.

There you have it in a nutshell, utilizing Google's AdSense program to increase your own profits truly does make "cents"..and dollars. How much you can earn is dependant on how much targeted traffic you can get to your site as well as how well you can integrate the advertisements in the site design as well.
